Balancing Family Fun and Rest During the Busy Summer Months-From HEC Founder Christina Camilleri

As a registered clinical counsellor who specializes in family therapy, I often see families who feel the pressure of summer. We previously talked about managing the anxiety of summer, but today I want to talk about the need for balance between activities and rest and how it is crucial to making your summer enjoyable for everyone.

Why Balance is Key

Summer is a time for creating memories, enjoying the outdoors, and breaking away from the usual routine. However, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and overbook our schedules. Too many activities can lead to burnout for both parents and children. While going to the beach and splash park regularly is great, having some quieter moments allow everyone to relax and recharge.

Finding a balance ensures that your family stays healthy, both physically and mentally. When we are constantly on the go, our bodies and minds don’t get the chance to rest and recuperate. This can lead to increased stress, irritability, and other health issues. On the flip side, too much downtime can lead to boredom and a lack of stimulation. The goal is to find that sweet spot where your family can enjoy summer to the fullest without feeling overwhelmed. So here are some tips to help you find that sweet spot.

Tips for Balancing Activities and Rest

  1. Create a flexible schedule: Start with a general plan for the week. Include a mix of active days and quieter days. For example, after a busy day at the water slides, plan for a casual day at home or a quiet afternoon in the park with a picnic. This balance helps everyone recover from the excitement and prepares for the next adventure.
  1. Listen to your family’s needs: Pay attention to how your children and you are feeling. Are the kids getting cranky or overly tired? Is your patience wearing thin? These are signs that it’s time to slow down. Encourage open communication with your family about how they’re feeling and adjust your plans accordingly.
  1. Prioritize restful activities: Not every day needs to be packed with high-energy activities. Include restful activities that still engage your children. Reading together, doing puzzles, being creative or even having a family movie night can be wonderful ways to bond without wearing everyone out.
  1. Be ok with saying no: It’s ok to say no to some activities or invitations. You don’t have to attend every event or go on every outing. Choose what’s best for your family and what aligns with your need for balance.
